Tanzanite's Shelf and Stuff

Over at Kailana's, she has listed the results of a poll done in the UK regarding the 100 books people could not live without. She thought it would be fun to put together a "bloggers" list of books that we can't live without (based on 10 books from everyone participating). The books should be ones that you have read and they don't have to be your favorite books - just ones that you think you or the world should not be without. Put together your list and leave a comment for Kailana letting her know where to find it by April 15th !

So here is my list, (in no particular order) mostly of books that I read when I was younger that instilled in me a deep love of reading. Even though it ended up being buried for several years!

1. The Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell. I read this book several times as a child and I loved it every time. I bought it for my daughter a few years ago and it remains one of her favorites.

2. The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien. I think I read the Hobbit in high school. I didn't read the Lord of the Rings trilogy until after I had seen the movies, but I enjoyed them very much.

3. The Narnia Series by CS Lewis. I'm pretty sure I did not make it through the complete series when I was younger but the three or so that I did read I thought were magical. Easily some of my favorite books of all time.

4. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle. Although I don't remember much about this one anymore, I do remember liking it a lot when I read it. I am going to read it again in the next few months as part of my Banned Books Challenge.

5. Little House on the Prairie series by Laura Ingalls Wilder. I read as many of these books as I could get my hands on when I was in junior high. Her writing style was so readable and I just loved the wonderful sense of family that came through in her books.

6. East of Eden by John Steinbeck. The only Steinbeck book I ever read and only because I saw the movie first. It might have been a made-for-TV movie and Jane Seymour was in it. I was in high school (so would have been in the 80's) and when I found out there was a book, I had to read it. Loved it!

7. The Color Purple by Alice Walker. I can't remember if I saw the movie first or not but remember bawling my eyes out when I read the book both at the sadness of it and the triumph.

8. Charlotte's Web by EB White. Another book I read over and over when I was young. That Templeton is quite the character!

9. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. This one I just read and am glad that I did. A beautiful story with a wonderful message.

10. The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory. OK, I'll admit, this one is kind of an odd choice. But I choose it because it really sparked my interest in reading again ( after it's 10 year plus hibernation) and so it is important to me for that reason.
