My New Project

Tuesday, November 30, 2010

When we were in England, one of the things I really loved seeing was all of the old tapestries hanging on the walls.  Many of the gift shops had reproductions that were very pretty - and very expensive.  So, I got it into my head that I could make my own and one day, I would have a room full of them hanging on the wall!   For my first attempt, I decided on The Lady and the Unicorn - Sight.

When it is finished, it will measure about 24 inches square and will have more than 121,000 stitches!!  I've been working on it for about a month now:

I have a long way to go!  I'll post updates periodically.  My husband says I"ll probably be sick of looking at it before I get it done!

That is going to be gorgeous! Did you create that pattern on your own? I love to cross stitch and once bought a pattern of a Madonna painting that I stitched for my grandmother that falls into the same category - solid stitching. I'm going to look forward to your updates. I know you'll be proud of it when you're done. :)

My, that's ambitious! It will be a long project, but I've been working on the same sampler for 15 years so I can't talk. Keep us posted on your progress! What stitch are you using?

Literate Housewife - No, I did not make the pattern myself, it's one I bought. I do however have software to make patterns (that I usually use for the bookmarks) and I"ll probably do that for the next tapestry.

    Joanne - Thanks!

Miss Moppet - It's counted cross stitch and I hope it doesn't take me 15 years!!

Great idea! I bet its going to look great when its done. I love to cross stitch but I always mess it up to the point where i can't fix it and the back always looks horrendous :)

The tapestry is going to be beautiful when you're finished. This one will be a lot of work. I love to cross stitch although in the last few years haven't been able to as much since I can't see as well anymore. I hope you'll keep posting updates.

Holly - the back of mine always look awful as well. I"m planning on backing this with a medium weight velvet. The ones that I saw in England had a "tube" of fabric on the back as well that you could put a rod through.

Darlene - I hear you about the eyes! I'm thinking about getting one of those magnifying things they make for doing needlework - hopefully that will help!

It's going to be beautiful - but what a lot of patience you must have! Keep us posted with the pictures.

    That will be beautiful!

I've got too mammoth cross stitch projects that are going to take me a long time to finish (R3's coat of arms and The Accolade).
