Monday Mosaic
Monday, February 7, 2011
I'm currently reading a book about Nell Gwynn (The Darling Strumpet) and since I"ve previously done a mosaic of Nell, this week's choice is Charles II. The son of Charles I and Henrietta Marie, Charles was born in 1630. After his father was executed in 1649, the younger Charles fled to France and spent time in Holland as well as other parts of Europe. When the Commonwealth was dissolved in 1660, Charles was asked to become England's king. He married Catherine of Braganza and although he had no legitimate children with her, he fathered a number of illegitimate ones (including a couple with Nell). Charles died in 1685. This portrait is from 1675.
